What Lock Grade Do You Actually Need for a Front Door? (ANSI/BHMA Explained)

"Grade 1" on a deadbolt box isn't a marketing tier — it's a pass/fail result from a specific ANSI/BHMA A156.5 test: a set number of open/close cycles, then a set number of forced-entry hammer strikes, then a strength test. Here's what each grade actually survived to earn its label, which door types call for which grade, and where the grade stops mattering.

Why the strike count matters more than it sounds
10 forced-entry strikes vs. 2 sounds abstract until you picture what the test simulates: a determined kick or shoulder-hit sequence. But between two bolts of otherwise similar price, the one rated for more strikes is the one built with a thicker bolt throw and stronger internal components — usually a longer (1" vs. 3/4") bolt throw and a hardened steel insert resisting drilling and sawing, not just a marketing difference.
Cycle count matters more than most homeowners realize
A deadbolt used twice a day (locking up at night, unlocking in the morning) hits roughly 730 cycles a year — a Grade 3 bolt's 100,000-cycle rating covers well over a century at that rate, so cycle count is essentially never the reason a home exterior door needs Grade 1 over Grade 2. Cycle count becomes the binding constraint specifically at commercial usage rates: a door opened 100–200 times a day crosses Grade 2's 150,000-cycle rating in two to four years, at which point mechanical wear — not a forced-entry event — becomes the lock's actual failure mode. This is the real reason Grade 1 is mandatory for commercial entrances and optional (if still recommended) for a home front door: the two grades are solving different problems for those two contexts.
When Grade 1 is genuinely overkill
Grade 1 costs more, and that cost isn't always buying you anything real. Is a Grade 1 lock always better than Grade 2?

Grade isn't the only lever
A Grade 1 deadbolt in a frame with 3/4" strike-plate screws is still a weak door — the grade only describes the lock itself, not the door, jamb, or hinges around it. Pair the right grade with real frame reinforcement for the actual security gain.
What the grade doesn't test
ANSI/BHMA grading covers operational durability, forced-entry impact resistance, and structural strength — it does not test lock-picking resistance, bump-key resistance, or drilling resistance as separate categories the way some specialty "high-security" cylinders are marketed. A Grade 1 lock with a basic pin-tumbler cylinder can still be picked by someone with the skill and tools to pick locks; the grade says nothing about that specific threat. For most homeowners this is an acceptable gap — picking requires skill, time, and privacy that opportunistic burglars rarely have, and a kicked-in door remains the far more common real-world failure mode the grade is actually built to address.
